ICE HAS BEGUN TO FINE CERTAIN IMMIGRANTS
There have been several news stories that ICE has begun sending letters to immigrants with deportation orders who have failed to leave the United States. The Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 provides ICE with the legal authority to fine immigrants for failing to depart or illegally entering the U.S. According to ICE, Fines can be upward of $799 per day for immigrants who do not comply with a final order of removal.
In one instance, an immigrant received a letter stating her fine is nearly $500,000. The story can be found at this link: https://www.cnn.com/2019/07/02/politics/ice-fines-undocumented-migrants/index.html
In the past, ICE rarely used their authority in issuing such fines, or at the very least, the fines were much more reasonable. However, ICE insists that these fines are part of an ongoing effort to address the issue of immigrants failing to leave the U.S. after receiving a final order of removal.
