Courtney Marshall graduated from Michigan State University – James Madison college with her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Theory and Constitutional Democracy in 1995.  She then attended the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law, where she earned her Juris Doctor degree in 2000.  Courtney was sworn-in to practice law in Michigan on November 6, 2000.

 

Courtney attended law school as a part-time evening student while working full-time as a Court Clerk for a Family Division Judge.  After passing the Bar Exam, Courtney continued working in the Family Division of the Court as a Judicial Staff Attorney where she remained for 16 years.  During her time as a JSA, Courtney availed herself of many continuing education opportunities, including both the Civil and Domestic Relations 40-hour mediation trainings.  Courtney spent a great deal of time as a JSA utilizing the skills and tools acquired during her mediation trainings informally mediating domestic relations cases.  Courtney also completed other advanced level trainings in various areas of family law, many focusing on domestic violence and the role that domestic violence plays in family law matters.

After almost 20 years working in the Family Division of the Court, Courtney opened a family law practice of her own, focusing on alternative dispute resolution and amicable divorces.  She then returned to the court system, but this time working in District Court, where she had the opportunity to learn the criminal law system from the District Court perspective.

 

Courtney is currently an active member of the State Bar of Michigan in good standing and a member of the Family Law Section.  Courtney’s experience and background allows her to see family law cases through a unique lens and perspective.  Courtney’s focus in representing clients involved in family law matters is on securing results that serve the best interest of the client and children involved, by retaining control throughout the process and utilizing tools and options to best minimize cost and time.  Family law matters can be extremely painful, difficult and time-consuming, but rest assured that Courtney will handle your case expeditiously and with honesty, integrity, care and compassion.
