Can you pass the Citizenship Test for Naturalization?
During the Naturalization Interview, a USCIS officer will be asking the applicant questions from a list of 100 Civics questions. These questions cover U.S. history and government topics. The Civics test is an oral test, and the officer will ask the prospective U.S. citizen up to 10 of the 100 questions on the list. In order to pass the test, 6 of the 10 questions must be answered correctly. In addition to the Civics test, the applicant must also pass the English test which comprises of reading, writing, and speaking.
To prepare for both the English test and the Civics test, USCIS has a website devoted to assisting the applicant with study materials. That website is www.uscis.gov/citizenship/learners/study-test. You can find all 100 questions for the naturalization Civics test on that website. There is an information brochure, a naturalization interview and test video, scoring guidelines, and many more helpful tools to aid the applicant in succeeding on all the tests.
USCIS allows two opportunities to take these tests per application, and you can be retested between 60 and 90 days from the date of your very first interview should you fail. If you are 65 years old and have been a legal permanent resident of the United States for 20 or more years, you may just study the questions marked with an asterisk (*) instead of all 100 questions.
There are also exceptions and modifications to the naturalization tests if you are unable to comply with the English and Civics requirements due to a physical or developmental disability or mental impairment.
